Why Kerala works for a workation
Kerala gives you three settings within a few hours of each other: a working city in Kochi, a beach town in Varkala and cool tea hills in Munnar. You can change the view without changing the country, the time zone or the SIM card.
It also helps that work is normal here. Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram have large IT parks, cafés are used to people on laptops, and most hosts in the main towns already get asked about Wi-Fi speed.
Where to stay
| Place | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Kochi | Reliable internet, cafés, coworking, the metro, and an international airport close by. Fort Kochi has the old-town feel. | It is a city. Traffic and noise are part of it. |
| Varkala | Cliff-top cafés, sea views, an easy evening routine after work. | Very busy in peak season, quiet in the monsoon months. |
| Munnar | Cool weather, tea hills, long walks. Good for deep work weeks. | Connection quality changes from one stay to the next. Check before you book. |
| Alappuzha | Backwater homestays and a slow pace. | Pick a homestay, not a houseboat, for working days. |
| Wayanad | Forest stays and fresh air. | Further from airports. Better for longer stays. |
A simple plan that works for many people: start in Kochi for a week to settle in, then move to Varkala or Munnar once your routine is set.
When to go
October to March is the dry, pleasant season and the most popular time to visit. Book stays early for December and January.
June to September is the southwest monsoon. It is green, quiet and often cheaper, and many people love working through the rain. Plan for it: ask about power backup, and keep a second internet option ready.
April and May are the hottest months. Hill stations like Munnar and Wayanad are the comfortable choice then.
Internet and work setup
- Ask for a speed test. Before you pay, ask the host for a screenshot of a speed test taken in the room you will use.
- Carry a backup. Buy a local SIM from a different network from your stay's broadband, and use it as a hotspot when needed.
- Ask about power backup. Many homes and stays have an inverter. Ask whether it covers the router.
- Check the desk. A proper table and chair matter more than the view for a 6-hour day.
- Know a coworking space nearby. Useful for important calls, even if you mostly work from your stay.
Time zones and client hours
Kerala runs on India Standard Time (UTC+5:30).
- Gulf (UAE, Oman): India is 1.5 hours ahead. Almost the full working day overlaps.
- Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain: India is 2.5 hours ahead. Plenty of overlap.
- UK and Europe: India is 3.5 to 5.5 hours ahead, depending on the country and daylight saving. Your afternoon is their morning.
- US East Coast: India is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead. Expect evening or early-morning calls.
How long to stay
Two weeks is the minimum to feel settled and still get proper work done. A month is better: many hosts offer lower monthly rates, and you stop living out of a suitcase.
Quick checklist before you book
- Speed test screenshot from the actual room
- Power backup that covers Wi-Fi
- A real desk and chair
- Local SIM for a hotspot backup
- Coworking space or quiet café within reach
- Season checked: peak, monsoon or summer
- Monthly rate asked for, if staying 3 weeks or more
